The factory was built between 1927 and 1929 to a design by Pietro Barbieri and opened in 1929 as S.T.I.M.A., Societa Trattori Italiani e Macchine Agricole Italia, a name proposed by Mussolini; it.wikipedia says it was built at the wish of the engineer Pio Perrone, while Roma Capitale's sheet says at Mussolini's. It was meant to seed an industrial district served by the Roma-Ostia Lido railway of 1924, and was left isolated when that did not follow. It became the Societa Acciaierie Romane in 1941, was bought by Breda Meccanica Romana in 1952 to build machinery and spare parts for the Roma-Lido trains, and closed in 1973. The conversion was designed by Maria Guarrera and Bruno Spinozzi to a project dated 10 December 1987 and opened on 15 September 1999 by Ci.Me. Grandi Impianti S.r.l. of Giuseppe Ciotoli and Giuseppe Merluzzi, at a cost of 26 billion lire. All the original facades were kept and consolidated by light-impact methods, the steel frame was reproduced, the plaster was hacked off and remade, and the pilasters and capitals were restored.
