Chiesa del Gesu
Historic site · Pigna, Italy
The mother church of the Society of Jesus, on the square that carries its name. Roma Capitale's tourism page carries separate winter and summer opening and mass schedules for it, so check that page against the season you are travelling in.
History
The church's own history says that Ignatius commissioned a design from Nanni di Baccio Biggio in 1551; that Michelangelo redrew the plan in 1554, unbuilt; that Cardinal Alessandro Farnese funded the work in 1561 and gave it to Vignola; that construction began in 1568; and that Giacomo della Porta designed the facade and completed the work in 1575, the church being dedicated in 1584. The painted decoration by Baciccia and the transept chapels of St Francis Xavier and St Ignatius belong to the later seventeenth century.
