Palazzo della Sapienza and the Archivio di Stato di Roma

Roma Capitale names Guidetto Guidetti, Pirro Ligorio and, for the sixteenth-century phase, Giacomo Della Porta on the building, and Borromini from 1632 to 1667. The Biblioteca Alessandrina, named for its patron Alexander VII Chigi, was built here between 1659 and 1665: a rectangular hall in three bays on the second floor, to the left of the church, with Clemente Maioli's allegorical Trionfo della religione on the central vault. The Archive has turned that monumental hall into an exhibition room. Its holdings run from the central administrative and judicial archives of the Papal State, from the fifteenth century to 1870, through hospital, family, confraternity and religious-corporation records and thousands of notarial protocols, to about 20,000 parchments, the earliest dated 883.
