Torre piezometrica dell'EUR (il Fungo)
Historic site · EUR, Italy
The 53-metre water tower on Piazza Pakistan, known as il Fungo, the mushroom. It is a working piezometric tower: it supplies the quartiere's non-potable water, feeds the cascade into the artificial lake, irrigates the lawns around the basin and supplies the fire mains.
History
It was built in 1957 and 1958 ahead of the 1960 Games, by the architects Aldo Capozza and Sergio Martinelli with the engineers Roberto Colosimo and Sergio Varisco. The tenor Mario Del Monaco's restaurant on the fourteenth floor, designed by Lorenzo Monardo, opened in 1964, with a bar at ground level. A bombing in September 1978 damaged the ground-floor bar, and the restaurant stayed shut until 1991.
