Giardino del Lago
Park · Pinciano, Italy
The lake garden at the heart of Villa Borghese, with an artificial islet in the middle of the water carrying the Tempietto di Esculapio. Roma Capitale's own page records that boats can be hired on the lake, and names the Meridiana and the Fontana della Famiglia dei Satiri along the banks. The planting is subtropical and Mediterranean together, with trachycarpus, chamaerops and phoenix palms, stone pine, cypress, atlas cedar and cedar of Lebanon, swamp cypress, bamboo, magnolia, paulownia and eucalyptus; the recorded birds include peregrine falcon, kestrel, black kite, cormorant, moorhen and mallard.
History
Antonio Asprucci laid the garden out in 1786 for Marcantonio IV Borghese. The rustic lake dates from 1791 and a niche fountain from 1620. The Fontana dei Mascheroni e Tritoni of 1909 reuses sculpture brought from Piazza Navona. The Fonte Gaia at the centre of the lake, also called the fountain of the satyrs or of the rabbits, dates from 1929 and is a bronze group of two satyrs holding a young satyr.
