Palazzo Mazzetti di Pietralata

It was built for Don Giovanni Battista Mazzetti, II Marchese di Pietralata, from about 1820, and took roughly fifteen years; the attribution is contested, to Virginio Vespignani by Salvatore Rebecchini and to Giuseppe Marasca by others. It occupies a whole block on four sides as far as Piazza delle Coppelle, and its central courtyard preserves in plan the outline of a large hall of the Terme di Nerone beneath it, together with a stretch of the baths' semicircular wall, as a marble plaque at the secondary staircase records. The elevation is rusticated to the first floor, with a great arched doorway rising to the mezzanine, a Greek-key frieze and a cornice on brackets carrying the family's lion's head, mace and roses. Vincenzo Camuccini frescoed the piano nobile. The family lived here until the 1930s, when the palace was sold.
