Porta Metronia

Historic site · Monti, Italy

A plain single unornamented arch cut in the brick curtain of the Aurelian wall — a posterula of the third order which, Roma Capitale says, was never monumentalised as the Pinciana and the Asinaria were.

History

In 1122 Callixtus II routed the Acqua Mariana through it, and the gate was closed to people and to goods, becoming a fortified water gate. The neighbouring rione of Celio concedes the gate to Monti in its own article.
