San Francisco Botanical Garden

The botanical garden at 1199 9th Avenue: 55 developed acres of a 70-acre site, showing more than 8,000 different kinds of plants. Its collections include the Andean Cloud Forest, Australia, California, Chile, Mediterranean, Mesoamerican Cloud Forest, New Zealand, South Africa, Southeast Asia Cloud Forest and Temperate Asia gardens, with camellias, high elevation palms, magnolias and rhododendrons, and the Ancient Plants, Moon Viewing Garden, Children's Garden, Conifer Lawn, Celebration Garden, Fountain Plaza, Garden of Fragrance, Great Meadow, Succulent Garden and Zellerbach Garden. History
John McLaren proposed an arboretum on this site in 1890, based on the idea of Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum. In 1926 Helene Strybing gave a gift to the Park Commission for development of the arboretum as a memorial to her late husband Christian Strybing; a 1930s master plan established the design concepts, and the arboretum opened in May 1940. St. Francis of Assisi (Feeding the Birds), a bronze by Clara Huntington created in 1939, was the gift of the artist in 1958, and a granite stupa carried in the city's Civic Art Collection as Unknown (Granite stupa) stands in the garden.
