St Alfege is a working parish church on Greenwich Church Street at SE10 9BJ, free to enter and open Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 4pm. It closes on Mondays except bank holidays, when it opens 11am to 4pm. Free lunchtime recitals run at 1.05pm on Thursdays and Saturdays. The parish records the dedication to St Alfege, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was martyred on this site in 1012.
History
The church is Grade I listed, NHLE 1358970, first listed on 19 October 1951, at national grid reference TQ 38306 77605. The parish states that it was the first London church designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, and names Thomas Tallis, General James Wolfe and John Flamsteed among the figures connected with it.
