Bunker di Villa Ada Savoia

Historic site · Parioli, Italy

An air-raid shelter cut into the tufa of the hill called delle Cavalle Madri in Villa Ada, about 350 metres in a straight line from the Palazzina Reale. It has been restored and open to visitors since April 2016 under an agreement between the Comune di Roma and the Associazione Roma Sotterranea, which runs the visits. No hours and no prices are given here.

History

It was built between 1940 and 1942 as a shelter for the royal family. There is no underground link to the Palazzina, which is why it was given a drive-in entrance where cars could be parked inside; it has armoured doors, air filtration, water and stores, and a second exit up a spiral stair from a small circular structure nearby that also ventilates it. No plans or cost schedules for its construction survive. It was abandoned after the war and heavily graffitied before the restoration.
