Catacomba di Trasone

A catacomb on via Salaria at the junction with via Yser, in the quartiere Parioli, entered through a manhole. It grew out of a sandstone quarry turned over to burial and has galleries on five levels. It runs almost entirely beneath Villa Grazioli and its park, and a light-well of it is visible in the courtyard of Villa Ada's Palazzina Reale. No source states whether it can be visited, so none is given here.

History

It is named for Trasone, a wealthy Roman of the time of Diocletian who converted to Christianity and is named in the passio of St Susanna. Ancient sources also call it Coemeterium Thrasonis ad s. Saturninum, for the martyr Saturninus buried there, whose above-ground basilica was still visible at the end of the sixteenth century.
