Catacomba di Sant'Ilaria

Historic site · Parioli, Italy

A small catacomb on the left side of via Salaria, under Villa Ada, in the quartiere Parioli. A narrow gallery joins it to the neighbouring cemetery of the Giordani. No source states whether it can be visited, so none is given here.

History

The connecting gallery to the Giordani was opened around the eighteenth century by corpisantari, relic-hunters. Antonio Bosio visited the catacomb at the end of the sixteenth century and described some of its paintings in his posthumous Roma sotterranea. Little of the decoration survives: of the scene in the so-called arcosolio dell'auriga there remain only the heads of the horses and a running figure.
