Villaggio Olimpico

The housing quarter built for the athletes of the 1960 Olympics, on the flat between the hill of Villa Glori and the Tiber. Its main axis is viale XVII Olimpiade and the Corso di Francia viaduct cuts it north to south. It is a zona urbanistica inside the quartiere rather than a unit of its own.
History
It stands on the site of a wartime shanty settlement of evacuees called campo Parioli, which the 1960 Games were the occasion to clear. It was built in 1958 and 1959 to designs by Vittorio Cafiero, Adalberto Libera, Amedeo Luccichenti, Vincenzo Monaco and Luigi Moretti, funded by the state employees' pension fund, the Comune di Roma and CONI; the completed buildings were handed to INCIS and allotted by competition to state employees. It was inaugurated in 1960 for the XVII Olympiad.
