Antemnae

Historic site · Parioli, Italy

The remains of a fortified town of Latium vetus on Monte Antenne, the hill now partly occupied by Forte Antenne inside the park of Villa Ada, above the confluence of the Aniene and the Tiber and looking down on via Salaria near Ponte Salario. It is in the care of the Sovrintendenza capitolina. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina glosses the name ante amnem, before the river.

History

Its people were the Antemnati, and Plutarch, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Livy, Virgil and Silius Italicus all mention the town. Rome under Romulus stormed and took it after the Antemnates raided Roman territory following the rape of the Sabine women. Antonio Nibby identified the site in 1834; it was excavated in 1878, in 1978 and in 1986.
