Torre del Papito

Historic site · Pigna, Italy

The medieval tower on the edge of the Area Sacra, and the practical heart of a visit: the Sovrintendenza Capitolina puts the archaeological site's ticket office and bookshop inside it, and uses its portico as one of the two display areas.

History

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina is careful about the tower's origins, saying that the fragmentary notices attribute it to the Papareschi and placing it in the fourteenth century. It records the popular derivation of the name from the antipope Anacleto II, called the Papetto, and traces the tower through the Foschi de Judeis, the Boccamazza and the Cesarini, and its appearance on the Nolli plan.
