History
Roma Capitale records that Leo X held a competition for the church in 1518, entered by Raphael, Michelangelo and Peruzzi among others, and that Jacopo Sansovino's project won; the interior was completed only in 1620, through Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Giacomo Della Porta and Carlo Maderno, who worked here in 1614 and raised the elongated dome the Romans call il confetto succhiato. The travertine facade with six Florentine saints is Alessandro Galilei's, 1734, under Clement XII, and the church was restored in 1992. Borromini and Maderno are buried here; Bernini's busts of Antonio Coppola and Antonio Cepparelli are held here; Ferdinando Fuga made the chapel of San Filippo Neri, who was rector from 1564 to 1575. it.wikipedia records a museum of sacred art at the same address holding works the basilica acquired over the centuries, and that the Florentine oratory of Sant'Orsola della Pieta, which stood where the western end of corso Vittorio Emanuele II now runs, belongs to the same story. No source states the museum's opening hours, so none are given here.
