Villa Altieri

Museum · Esquilino, Italy

A seventeenth-century suburban villa on viale Manzoni, restored between 2009 and 2010 as the Palazzo della cultura e memoria storica, and now holding a small museum together with the library and the historical archive of the Città metropolitana di Roma Capitale. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

History

It was commissioned in the 1670s by Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni, cardinal-nephew of Clement X, from Giovanni Antonio De Rossi, who converted an old farm building. It was sold in 1857 and bought about 1862 by Cardinal Francesco Saverio de Mérode; after the breach of Porta Pia it was leased to the Italian state, which ran a women's penal institution there until 1897, then to the Dorotee, who ran a girls' boarding school in it to 1933, and then to the Figlie di Nostra Signora al Monte Calvario. The Provincia di Roma bought it in 1975.
